Why Foldable Smartphones Might Finally Take Off

I’ve been following the foldable smartphone story since the first prototypes hit the market. At the time, it felt like the future had arrived—phones that could bend, fold, and transform right in your hand. But after years of hype, reality has caught up. Growth has slowed.

Does that mean foldables are done? Not at all. To me, it means the category is shifting gears.

Where Foldables Stand Today?

Yes, the latest launches have seen stronger-than-expected demand. But let’s not mistake that for runaway success. Expectations were already modest. Pre-orders look good on paper, but the real question is: will people keep buying after the initial wave? That part is still shaky.

Here’s why:

  • They’re expensive. For most people, a foldable still costs the equivalent of a month’s salary (or more). That’s a huge barrier.
  • Early adopters are already in. The enthusiasts got theirs. But upgrading every year? That’s a tougher sell.

Why I Think 2026, Not 2025, Will Be the Real Test

Analyst forecasts (Canalys, Omdia) point to something big—over 50% year-on-year growth in 2026, with foldables finally crossing 20 million units annually.

To me, this makes sense for two reasons:

  1. Competition will heat up. More brands, more options, more pressure on price.
  2. Flip-style devices will go mainstream. The clamshell form factor is already resonating—it’s just waiting to hit that sweet spot of affordability.

It’s Not About Hardware Anymore

Honestly, I don’t expect some radical new hinge or fold technology to change the game. The tech is already impressive.

What really needs to shift is consumer psychology. Foldables aren’t just about screens—they’re about aspiration. They’re about owning something that feels different, futuristic, and personal. When the price and perception align, adoption will accelerate.

Foldables aren’t dead. Far from it. We’re past the novelty phase, and the next chapter is about proving they belong in the everyday buyer’s pocket.

If 2026 delivers on forecasts, this could be the moment foldables finally move from niche luxury to a true mainstream choice.
